We’re doing it again! Last week we demolished Cedar and Hemlock cabins with the intent of rebuilding new, bright and well ventilated cabins similar to what we built in 2015. The cabins will be a fun beach hut / treehouse blend and will be fully winterized for 12 months use. Construction on the new cabins is now underway and will be complete for the first campers in late June. Check-out these photos from the two new cabins we built spring 2015! Photos of the new cabins will be posted here as progress is made.

At the August board meeting, the Silver Lake board unanimously agreed to replace the four camper cabins on the south side of the property. These cabins, Balsam, Sumac, Hemlock and Cedar , tucked deep into the cedar grove are the original cabins built in the late 1960’s after retiring the idea of using canvass tents.
Our “resident designer”, Alex Jenkins spent one week at camp this summer listening, dreaming and drawing. Alex met with staff, talked to campers, parents and volunteers, slept in various cabins (to get the full experience), walked the sites and then started to draw! The result is a fun, whimsical design that’s best described as a combination of a treehouse and traditional cabin.
Beyond being 8ft off the ground with a slide from the porch and a mini climbing wall, there’s a covered front porch, plenty of windows for light and ventilation (actually there’s more window space then wall space), sky lights, bunk-beds and useable rainy day space below.
Despite our desire to replace all four cabins this off-season, we have opted to replace two before summer 2015 and two more before summer 2016. If you are interested in sponsoring one of the cabins, please contact the camp office.

Bees provide us with many things, as well as teach us lots. By having bees at Silver Lake we hope to make an impact both environmentally as well as educationally. The bees will help the pollination of our vegetable gardens, plants and trees around camp and hopefully provide us with a good crop of LOCAL honey for our kitchen. We also see that the bees are a highlight in our programming both during the summer as well as during school programs (continued below pictures).
We learn a lot about our natural world through the bees. We learn about insects and plants and the connection between the two and the role they play with our food through pollination. Life lessons such as communication, being a team player, task oriented, and adaptable, leadership and having a strong work ethic are easily learned by watching and knowing about the bee’s social structure in the hive. Please stop by or book your class for a tour of our bees and see what all the buzz is about.

Thank you to everyone (all 65 of you) who came to the annual fall work weekend. Thanks to the large volunteer turn-out we were able to cross everything off the to-do-list! Here are a few pictures to help tell the story. Spring Work Weekend is May 1-3, 2015 and Fall Work Weekend will be October 30-November 1, 2015 – mark your calendars!
NOTE: Going forward we have arranged the retreat and rental schedule to allow for some consistency in the dates for Spring and Fall Work Weekends. Spring Work Weekend will be the first weekend in May while Fall Work Weekend will be the last weekend of October.

Leanne and the pre-camp crew have been hard at it in the garden. The school groups have “enjoyed” spinach and radishes (actually they really did enjoy them) and there’s plenty more to come – strawberries, raspberries, lettuce of all sorts, beans, tomatos, garlic, carrots, ground cherries and more!
